Yearly update letter

Now that we are approaching the one year point since ICAB approval, I was wondering if we should prepare an update letter to send to ICAB saying what has happened in our lives in the past year. Some people do this, some don't. I'm wondering is it worth the time and effort? Will it make any difference anyways? Just wondering what everyones thoughts were on this issue and what you guys did at this stage. Thanks.

I hear of some people who do/have done this. I have no idea if it helps the file along at ICAB or not. I think our agency has everyone do it who have been waiting for a year.

Our agency never mentioned anything like this so I'm not sure what to tell you. We received our referral at one year so this was never anything that was suggested of us. Maybe your referral will come soon and you won't need to worry about this, either!

Renee,
We sent a very short letter with an updated family picture to our agency who then passed it along to the ICAB office at the 1 year mark. (I am guessing it didn't help us since we are still waiting)However, I don't think it can hurt anything, especially if you want to do one. You can bet if we reach the 2 year mark in waiting I will write another one...probably begging and pleading with them. Ha! I say go for it!

Renee,
Are you using an agency to facilitate your adoption? We are using an agency, and according to our contract, we are not allowed to communicate with ICAB (the agency will do that on our behalf if necessary). If you're using an agency, you may want to check with them.

No, I'm not using an agency. I have heard several people, who are using an agency, say that their agency has sent a letter to ICAB at the 1 year mark just to update them. So I'm guessing that that must be okay.

We didn't do it, but we had our referral at 13 months. I don't think it would hurt, though.

Yes, I've heard about that too...I think most agencies ask you to touch base and update your information in a short letter accompanied by a couple of recent pictures after a year. It doesn't need to be very complicated. Someone from our agency told us that they like this at ICAB! It does not seem to be mandatory, and I have no idea if it will make a difference or help in any way... but what do you have to lose?!

We did not have to do this, but we got our referral before 1 yr mark. But, I think it's a good idea. I got the impression that the SWs (ICAB's and care facilities' alike) really go thru the items in your file.
